Adios Linux

  Adios Linux is one of the most impressive boot-from-CD builds I have ever seen, and if your goal is to learn networking this is the one for you! This is built on the RedHat distribution, and comes packed with all the network servers and security tools you could ever wish for. It was developed by the Queenslane University of Technology in Brisbane, Australia as a tool for teaching students how to install and administer a network.

Because of that, there are a lot of tools and components not normally found in a boot-from-CD build, including 4 instances of User Mode Linux. That allows you to run 4 virtual Linux sessions in the same box, each with their own IP number and configurations. This lets you install and run your own entire network on a single computer, testing authenticaton and security settings, running a server in one and a client in another, and so forth. Great for testing PHP or Perl scripts before uploading them to your live server, as a single example.

The Install screen gives you a range of options, from running it entirely in RAM (great for those with an NTFS formatted hard drive), through installing the VAR directory on your windows hard drive, all the way to a full install that doesn't repartition your hard drive.

  Linux Build: RedHat 8.0.

  Desktop: Defaults to KDE3, also has Gnome, IceWM kicks in if your resources do not support KDE/Gnome.

  Hard Drive Used: Anywhere from none to 2 Gig, depending on the Boot choice you make.

  Programs Included:
    OpenOffice1.0 (Windows Compatable Office2K);
    Snort, , more...
    Asteroids, FreeCiv (server and client), Turing, Mahjong, Reversi, Tron, more...

  Pros: Great Network setup, with lots of network tools. Wide range of hardware supported; KDE3, with most programs accessable, and everything else installable.

  Cons: Give me some time, I know I will find a Con or 2 here... LOL
